TRB Webinar on Spatial Modeling for Highway Performance Monitoring System Data: Part 1

TRB will conduct a webinar on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM PT that will discuss how to incorporate spatial modeling and statistical tools to enhance the quality and productivity of travel monitoring data. Presenters will focus on the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), which is a compilation of roadway characteristics, including inventory, traffic, and performance data. They will describe a case study from the Hawaii Department of Transportation, which incorporated spatial modeling tools to fulfill a federal HPMS mandate.

This is the first in a two-part series; the second webinar will be conducted on March 6, 2018.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Geographic Information Science and Applications.

Webinar Presenters

  • Maaza Mekuria, Hawaii Department of Transportation
  • Dan Seedah, Texas A&M Transportation Institute

Moderated by:  Jennifer Campbell, Oregon Department of Transportation

Webinar Outline

  1. Description of HPMS travel data items
  2. Relationship between HPMS data items
  3. Linear referencing system and its usefulness in HPMS travel data processing
  4. Sample panels and HPMS items
  5. Leveraging spatial analysis
  6. Question and answer session

The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify HPMS traffic data needs and requirements
  • Describe the linear referencing system and its use in HPMS processing
  • Describe cardinal and spatial joins through attribute, connectivity, proximity, and similarity
