Road Safety Audits – The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) defines a Road Safety Audit (RSA) as a “formal safety performance evaluation of an existing, or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team.” The primary focus of an RSA is safety, while working within the context of other aspects, such as mobility, access, surrounding land use, and aesthetics. By using an unbiased and multidisciplinary team to perform a comprehensive review and an evaluation of physical, operational, and human-factors-related safety issues for a given study area, RSAs make sure that safety is adequately considered.

Local Agency Safety Plan Development – This course focuses on using a Systemic and a Spot Location Approach to safety planning. Caltrans would prefer the local agencies to have a Data-Driven Local Road Safety Plan that would provide the data used to identify the safety concern, the locations and the improvement. A Local Road Safety Plan can be developed in house. By the end of this course the student will understand the data requirement and how to review this data with the intent of identifying safety programs for both a spot location and a systemic approach. This course was developed for the Managers and lead workers that have been charged by their organization to develop and manger a Transportation Safety Plan for the agency.
