Hydrologic Analysis and Design Training

The National Highway Institute is now offering the Hydrologic Analysis and Design with the Watershed Modeling System (WMS) Software (FHWA-NHI-135080) as an online, blended training. Combining web-conference and web-based training formats, this hydraulics course is available virtually, with live, instructor-led sessions and independent, online modules.

The course provides an introduction to hydrologic modeling in WMS. In addition to teaching about computing geometric and hydrologic parameters, this course specifically covers the Rational Method, National Streamflow Statistics (NSS), and HEC-HMS hydrologic models.  Participants that score 70% or higher on the course exam will receive 1.9 continuing education units (CEU).

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Use digital terrain data to automate drainage basin delineation.
  • Identify and use sources of electronic data such as websites and proprietary data.
  • Compute drainage basin parameters commonly used in hydrologic models.
  • Use land use and soils geographic data to compute runoff coefficients and curve numbers.
  • Set up input data files for industry standard models used to develop peak flow estimates and hydrographs.

The 2021 course details and registration can be found on the National Highway Institute website.
