Hosted by FHWA in cooperation with the National Local Technical Assistance Program Association (NLTAPA) and the National Center for Rural Road Safety. Rural roadway departures account for approximately one-third of all U.S. traffic fatalities – about 30 people a day. The FHWA has identified proven countermeasures to reduce the number and severity of these crashes.
Presenters and Topics to be covered include:
• Shoulder Widening, Rumble Strips, and SafetyEdgeSM: Don Butler, Highway Safety Engineer, Nebraska DOT; Larry Legg, Assistant County Engineer, Lancaster County, NE. Don and Larry will present on the analysis of NDOT’s implementation of 2 foot paved shoulders, rumble stripes, and SafetyEdgeSM and how that analysis was extended to a HSIP funded paved shoulder program for county roads and the state highway system to reduce fatalities and serious injuries.
• County HSIP Program & Local Road Safety Plans: Scott Davis, Assistant State Traffic Design Engineer & Matthew Enders Local Technical Services Manager with Washington State DOT. Scott and Matthew will discuss the implementation of the HSIP program in Washington State including application of local road safety plans to all 39 counties. Dan will present on the application of High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) at over 59 locations on rural arterial roadways in the last six years. This will include how sites with high crash rates were selected, some of the road preparation work that was done first, the significant drop in crashes after installation, and some of the long-term maintenance needs that may arise.
• HFST and Safety Analysis Tools: Jon, Johnson, Highway Commissioner, Eau Clair County & Andi Bill, Director of Wisconsin LTAP.
