FHWA Designing and Operating Roads for Safe Speeds Web-based Training

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) National Highway Institute (NHI) now offers the Designing and Operating Roadways for Safe Speeds (FHWA-NHI-380128) training that introduces innovative methods to setting speed limits using principles and elements of the Safe System approach.

This Web-based Training (WBT) provides learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively design safe roads, set safe speeds, and select treatments that mitigate crash severity. Participants will learn how incorporating innovative design concepts and new approaches to setting speeds, such as self-enforcing roadways, target speed, and injury minimization, can reduce the likelihood of fatal and serious injury crashes for all roadway users.

This course is designed for all stakeholders who share the responsibility for creating and managing a safety transportation system including Federal, State, Tribal, and local government and enforcement agencies; community leaders, engineers, emergency personnel, and educators in this field.

If participants would like to receive a more comprehensive training after completing the Designing and Operating Roadways for Safe Speeds (FHWA-NHI-380128) WBT, they have the option of requesting a one-day instructor-led session to supplement the WBT from the FHWA Resource Center. The instructor-led session applies lessons learned in the WBT and introduces a process for setting speeds based on target speeds, injury minimization, and serving all roadway users.

If you have any questions referencing this instructor-led session, please contact Timothy Taylor.
