The City of Walnut Creek’s Safe Sightings of Signs and Signals (SSOSS) software won the Pioneer Award from the 2023 Build A Better Mousetrap competition hosted by the Center for Local-Aid Support, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The SSOSS software program streamlines road safety efforts, saving both time and money by automating the secure inspection of obstructed signs and traffic signals.
On September 26, 2023, Caltrans and California’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Center, met with the City to recognize and award their breakthrough contribution in developing an efficiency for an ongoing, common maintenance concern. This is the first award a California agency or tribe has received from the Build a Better Mousetrap competition!

Caltrans and the LTAP Center endeavors to host a presentation and open the application period for the 2024 Build A Better Mousetrap competition in early spring 2024. This will be California’s opportunity for local public agencies and tribes to showcase why this State is a leader in innovation as we aim to take home at least one more award in 2024!
