The City of Moreno Valley’s Slow and Safe, Save a Life won the Innovation Award from the Federal Highway Administration’s 2024 Build a Better Mousetrap Competition.
CALTAP Director Tom O’Brien, City of Moreno Valley Julian Van Simaeys, and Caltrans DLA Daniel
Burke stand atop the winning innovative project.
The City developed speed cushions, which calmed traffic to enhance safety for all motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. A concern with developing traffic calming measures is that it also slows the response time for emergency vehicles. However, Slow and Safe, Save a Life was designed, tested, and now implemented to allow emergency responders to drive through the speed cushions without disruption, including to life-saving equipment on and inside the vehicles!
On October 8, 2024, the Caltrans Division of Local Assistance (DLA) and the California Local Technical Assistance Program (CALTAP) Center presented the Innovation Award and hosted a brief question and answer session with the City of Moreno Valley to understand more about the potential for the Slow and Safe, Save a Life speed cushions.
